Install the New Minitube

With Minitube you can watch YouTube videos in a new way: you type a keyword, Minitube gives you an endless video stream.

Minitube is not about cloning the original YouTube web interface, it aims to create a new TV-like experience. It also gives you the ability to watch Youtube videos without the need for running Adobe Flash. A perfect option to save resources if you are runing an older system. No need for Youtube ads or those bothersome comments people like to make. You even have an option to download the video in MPEG4 format, compatible with most devices.

The new version of Minitube comes with a bunch of great new features. These include a new search filter, a helpful download progress bar, and even spelling suggestions in case you misspell something.

There are multiple ways to install Minitube, but the easiest way Ive found for everyone  (especially for 64 bit users) is to use the WebUpd8 PPA.

Lets do it! Open a terminal window and type in…

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8

Your system will now fetch the PPA’s key. This enables your Ubuntu system to verify that the packages in the PPA have not been interfered with since they were built. Now you should tell your system to pull down the latest list of software from each archive it knows about, including the PPA you just added and then we’ll also install Minutube at the same time:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install minitube

Thats it! Now you’re ready to use the NEW and improved Minitube!

* NOTE: Some versions of Ubuntu have a problem with streaming video which affects programs like totem and minitube. If after installing Minitube and videos dont work at all you’ll have to run a simple fix as well. I did not have any problems on 12.10. Your experience might vary.

If you have no video in Minitube, open a terminal and run the command to rename the “libgstvideoparsersbad.so” file:

32 bit users use…

sudo mv /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so.bak

64 bit users use…

sudo mv /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so.bak
