Ubuntu App: Cycle

Ubuntu App: Cycle

Cycle, not as in bicycle. Cycle as in ovulation cycle. Yes, there is even an app for this too and it is quite handy.

Cycle is a calendar program for women. Given a cycle length or statistics for several periods, it can calculate the days until menstruation, the days of “safe” sex, the fertile period, and the days to ovulations, and define the d.o.b. (date of birth) of a child. It allows the user to write notes and helps to supervise the reception of hormonal contraceptive tablets.

Women will be the primary users of this little app, but guys could make use of it and monitor their wife OR girlfriends. I remember back in the Windows days having to pay money for a simple app like this. Thankfully those days are gone.

Upon starting Cycle you will be given the opportunity to input your name and a password as well to protect your cycle info from prying eyes. Once in the program you can set the preferences and change default colors if you choose. Right clicking on any date will give a little list of options such as when you started your cycle, or when you started your contraceptive pills. Once selecting a cycle start date, the calendar will show you safe sex days and fertile days. This can even calculate the date of birth of your little pipsqueak if you have one baking in the oven. Pretty cool huh?

There was a WARNING at the first run of the program. Check it out:

NOTE: This program is not a reliable contraceptive method. It does neither help to prevent sexual transmision diseases like AIDS.

It is just an electronic means of keeping track of some of your medical data and extract some statistical conclusions from them. You cannot consider this program as a substitute for your gynecologist in any way.

Yes, please dont try to swallow the source code or install it on your “hard drive” as a means of protection. And dont let Dr. Sbaitso sub as your gynecologist either. Bad things might happen.

Installation was easy in Ubuntu 10.10 by searching in the Ubuntu Software Center for “ovulation” or searching Synaptic Package manager for “cycle”. This should also be available in Oneiric too. After installation I was not able to find Cycle in my Apps list, so its easily accessed by clicking ALT+F2 and typing in cycle to run the program.
