Not a problem! You may need to install SNAPD first so please read through this briefly…

Ubuntu 16.04 (and derivatives): Ubuntu includes snapd by default starting with the 16.04 LTS (xenial) release. No installation steps are required and you can use snapd directly.

To watch the World Cup games on Ubuntu 16.04 or newer just install the AceStream Player with this terminal command:

sudo snap install acestreamplayer

To run for the first time, it is recommended to use the terminal:

snap run acestreamplayer

(without sudo)

The first configuration takes some time, but when it is finished the player and the server icon will appear. And also the two shortcuts (server and player) are created.

Now head over to Reddit and check out the available soccer streams and look for the game you want…

https://www.reddit.com/r/soccerstreams/

Look for an AceStream link similar to this one:

acestream://877b368b1696429710420a676d33599bed5f1732

Open the AceStream Player (icon looks like this)…

….and plug your acestream link into the player by going to: “Media > Open Ace Stream Content ID” and then paste your link and then play it. Super easy!

HAVE FUN!

For the older 14.04 LTS (trusty) release or any flavour (e.g. Lubuntu) which doesn’t include snapd by default, you have to install it manually from the archive using these terminal commands:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install snapd

After Snapd is installed you can then proceed to install AceStream Player.

sudo snap install acestreamplayer

Thats it!

PS… make sure this is legal in your country. Thank You and Have a Nice Day 🙂

Check Ubuntu Linux for Shellshock https://iheartubuntu.com/2014/09/check-ubuntu-linux-for-shellshock/ https://iheartubuntu.com/2014/09/check-ubuntu-linux-for-shellshock/#respond Fri, 26 Sep 2014 20:02:00 +0000 http://iheartubuntu.com/?p=32

Shellshock is a new vulnerability that allows attackers to put code onto your machine, which could put your Ubuntu Linux system at a serious risk for malicious attacks.

Shellshock uses a bash script to access your computer. From there, hackers can launch programs, enable features, and even access your files. The script only affects UNIX-based systems (linux and mac).

You can test your system by running this test command from Terminal:

env x='() { :;}; echo vulnerable’ bash -c ‘echo hello’

If you’re not vulnerable, you’ll get this result:

bash: warning: x: ignoring function definition attempt bash: error importing function definition for `x’ hello

If you are vulnerable, you’ll get:

vulnerable hello

You can also check the version of bash you’re running by entering:

bash –version

If you get version 3.2.51(1)-release as a result, you will need to update. Most Linux distributions already have patches available.

———–

If your system is vulnerable make sure your computer has all critical updates and it should be patched already. if you are using a version of Ubuntu that has already reached end of life status (12.10, 13.04, 13.10, etc), you may be screwed and may need to start using a newer version of Ubuntu.

This should update Bash for you so your system is not vulnerable…

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install –only-upgrade bash

Ubuntu & Bitcoin: The Perfect Match https://iheartubuntu.com/2013/11/ubuntu-bitcoin-the-perfect-match/ https://iheartubuntu.com/2013/11/ubuntu-bitcoin-the-perfect-match/#respond Tue, 26 Nov 2013 21:31:00 +0000 http://iheartubuntu.com/?p=50

Dear Mark Shuttleworth,

Greetings! Many of us in the open source community are proud of you as a leading pioneer in many different avenues ranging from internet security, to space tourism, to open source software. I say now is the time to wear that pioneer hat (or  converge Ubuntu linux with the bitcoin markets. Bring the two together finally.

It is apparent that bitcoin and virtual currencies are the next frontier. Bitcoin is to money what Ubuntu is to operating systems. Merging the two is complete common sense.

In what ways can this be done? Both the Ubuntu donation page and Ubuntu Shop could begin to accept bitcoins. They currently do not. AskUbuntu.com could accept bitcoins for bounties on questions. The Ubuntu Software Center could accept bitcoins for software sold and pay developers in BTC. Ubuntu could also save a small percentage from moving away from VISA and Paypal and the other forms of acceptable payments. If Ubuntu is doing $100 million a year in sales (mostly from support) it could easily save $2 or 3 million which could go towards development and expansion of the Ubuntu community and have a huge impact. Ubuntu could also accept BTC as payment for music in UbuntuOne. Better yet, the big crowd funding campaign earlier this year for the Ubutnu Phone could have accepted bitcoins and propelled the campaign way past its funding point. Instead, it fell short. Mr. Shuttleworth, there are bitcoin millionaires and billionaires out there right now that want to put their bitcoins to good use. Your campaign would have been perfect.

The merging of communities is perfect because it is open source. Imagine the possibilities of programs being developed around bitcoin. We already have offline wallets like Armory, Bitcoin-Qt and MultiBit. What if Ubuntu developed its own bitcoin wallet?

I am asking Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu linux, to begin the motions to accept bitcoins across the entire Ubuntu universe.

Sincerely, I Heart Ubuntu

Opera TV https://iheartubuntu.com/2012/01/opera-tv/ https://iheartubuntu.com/2012/01/opera-tv/#comments Fri, 27 Jan 2012 06:39:00 +0000 http://iheartubuntu.com/?p=191

From the looks of it, Ubuntu TV already has some stiff competition. Its called “Opera TV” and from the outset it looks like it will do far more than what Ubuntu TV could do. While Ubuntu TV is going for the “everything video” angle focusing on showing video and showing it well, Opera TV is planning to have all of its already user created apps, widgets and extensions available in its new software built into a TV. This could have far more uses than Ubuntu TV and appear to a wider audience as well. Who wouldnt want to have all these apps right on their television? No longer will you be glued to your computer doing Facebook or Google Plus, you can just sit in front of the TV all day 🙂

Another benefit for Opera app developers is that they could get paid for their apps, which has not yet been mentioned in any plans for Ubuntu TV.

The project appears still in its infancy and could go head to head with Ubuntu TV in terms of courting potential TV manufacturers, developers, and more. What do you think about Opera TV versus Ubuntu TV? Totally different beasts, one in the same basically, or complimenting each other?

Desura is Steam for Linux https://iheartubuntu.com/2012/01/desura-is-steam-for-linux/ https://iheartubuntu.com/2012/01/desura-is-steam-for-linux/#respond Thu, 19 Jan 2012 15:35:00 +0000 http://iheartubuntu.com/?p=209

Yep, we always try to act serious, talking of TCP/IP stack, buffer overflows and latency even with girls we meet at the cocktail lounge. But since we like to be honest with our readers, we love video games too and we should also admit that whenever we had the chance to see Steam, the famous video game downloader and installer, at work on our friends’ Windows machines we have felt a bit envious. What a wonderful thing, isn’t it? No more scratched CDs that will never load, no more waste of paper. Click, pay and the game is up and running. Well, Ubuntu maniacs, let’s rejoice together because the Desura guys brought us the perfect and final solution for our Ubuntu boxes. Just install Desura and you will able to search, pay (not always, many games will come for free) and download, choosing your game from a very wide library of available titles which will run flawlessly on our dear Linux system.

The service, which heavily relies on the Chromium framework, lets you download a very wide range of games, mostly games that are developed by independent software houses and also provides a huge amount of “free as in speech” games, giving the opportunity to thousands of independent developers to potentially reach millions of users.

We downloaded some games and tested them out. They all work flawlessly making Desura an almost MUST HAVE for Ubuntu users, especially if you are a gamer. There are not a whole lot of free games available, but there are some worthwhile free games like Triple A, Zero Ballistics and Smokin Guns. Many of the games that are for sale, do go on sale so its worth it to log into Desura often and check the sales. There are some great games you could pick up at great prices.

And now we come to licensing. The Desura platform is “agnostic”, meaning that it will distribute whatever content developers want to distribute. So watch out, because developers may use never-insulted-enough copy-protection systems like the infamous DRM. As for the client, the Desura team announced that the client side of the application will be freed to enhance further development.

Desura, which is at the moment available just for Linux and Windows, can be downloaded from the website of the project. It is easy to install by downloading the Linux tar file, extracting it and double clicking the Desura file. This will install Desura onto your system, putting an icon both on your desktop and in your Application > Games folder.

Ubucon SCaLE10X: Speakers needed https://iheartubuntu.com/2011/11/ubucon-scale10x-speakers-needed/ https://iheartubuntu.com/2011/11/ubucon-scale10x-speakers-needed/#respond Tue, 01 Nov 2011 16:44:00 +0000 http://iheartubuntu.com/?p=260

Ubucon at SCaLE returns on Friday, January 20th, 2012. An Ubucon is an organized event for Ubuntu users that’s halfway between a conference and a convention. The main focus is for Ubuntu users to get together and meet others, share ideas, and improve their skills. There will be presentations as well as themed open participation sessions.

Ubucon is would like to line up five speakers for this year’s Ubucon. Ubucon is looking for presentations on topics that would be of interest to casual and beginning users. A presentation might be as simple as how to use Evolution to tie together your email, calendaring, and contacts, and how that integrates into the GNOME desktop. If it’s something useful that you wish you’d have known as a beginning Ubuntu user then it’s fair game.

If you have a topic you’d like to present, please send your proposal to [email protected]. Include your full name, a contact email, and a description of what your proposed talk would cover. Because they want to leave plenty of time for communication, you should plan to talk for up to 45 minutes, including any questions and answers portion of the talk. They will have a projector and a computer available for slides in OpenDocument or PDF format. If you have any special requirements, please mention that in your proposal.

Once again there will be a videographer who will be filming the event. The hope is to post videos of each talk online after Ubucon. The intention is to offer these videos under the CC-BY-SA license along with any slides or presentation material you would like to share. This is similar to the requirements for SCaLE10X speakers, but please let Ubucon know if you would like to opt out of live streaming and/or online availability of your talk.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, December 12th, 2011. Selected speakers will be notified two weeks later, by Monday, December 26th, 2011.

In addition, there will be a round of lightning talks at the end of the day, so if you want to talk but can’t do it for 45 minutes, or just want to get a taste of sharing with others, you’ll have an opportunity to tell us all about something awesome.
